The Board of Education of USD 490 met in regular session on Monday, September 11, 2017, in the Board of Education Office, 124 West Central, El Dorado, Kansas.

I. Routine

1. The meeting was called to order by Board President Vicki Coash at 6:00 p.m.

Monty Hughey made a motion to approve the agenda. Seconded by Norm Wilks, the motion carried 6-0.

Bernie Spradling made a motion to approve the Consent Calendar. Seconded by Scott Starkey the motion carried 6-0.

7. Updates

• Skelly Update
Principal Stan Ruff, Assistant Principal Trista Cuthbertson, and teachers Taryn O’Brien and Kelly Clennan shared information on the KansasSTAR School Improvement Plan.

• Director of Technology Update
Doug Jensen, Executive Director of Technology, provided an update on technology initiatives in the district, including 1st grade iPad rollout, Apple Classroom and Apple Teacher, implementation of the automated substitute calling program AESOP, as well as conversion of the phone system to Cox. This is the 14th year of the 1:1 laptop initiative.

• Construction Update
All structural steel construction is complete at Grandview and Blackmore elementary sites. The asbestos abatement process has begun at the PAC site as well as removal and relocation of trees. Memorial markers have been removed and will be offered to the families. All of the plaques will be honored on a memorial listing in the newly renovated building. Plaques recognizing the auditorium renovation will remain in the lobby. Simpson will be installing banners over the fencing at the Performing Arts Center showing renderings of the final renovation. Dirt/rock from the new Grandview site will be moved to BG Stadium for grading work in field event areas.

8. Purchase Offer

The district has been offered a purchase contract for Lincoln School. The bond issue ballot language stated that all three abandoned buildings would be razed. The Board discussed a determination on any continued negotiation for proceeding contrary to ballot language.

Scott Starkey made a motion to decline the offer from Real Life Christian Church to purchase the property at 522 W. 5th Avenue, El Dorado KS, and to proceed with razing of the three elementary buildings once construction is complete, seek property appraisal of the lots and pursue sale of the existing land. Norm Wilks seconded the motion. The motion carried 6-0.

9. USD 490 Personnel Recommendations

Bernie Spradling made a motion to approve the following USD 490 recommendations.
Norm Wilks seconded the motion. The motion carried 6-0.

Sue Givens announced that ACT scores continue to rise and the percentage of EHS graduates achieving college ready benchmarks is higher than both the state and national averages.
